Today’s Drill of the Week is the –Multi-Use/Cover and Return Drill.

Strengths of the Cover/Return Drill:

  1. Teaches Backs to attack and avoid open field tacklers

  2. This simulates coverage on Kickoffs or Punt Coverage, the coverage player must avoid blockers, run the field, break down, read the runners movement, and make an open field tackle.

  3. A fun and competitive drill, which stimulates open field tackling and avoid open field tackling.

  4. Multiple usage.  All phases of football can use this drill.  Defense running, breaking down and tackling, Offensive players running and attacking a tackler, and all of the kicking game phases.

** You are limited to your creativity with this drill.  You can set up two of these drills side-by-side to get more players involved.  To simulate a Kick-Off/Punt, kick the ball or throw the ball to the runner.  Have the runner run either way but he must run between the cones.  He is trying to score, just as if he was on the Kick-Off return.  Cones should be about 5 yards apart.  Return man should attack the defender and get the ball to the outside.  Many times on special teams if you break one tackle you have a chance at having a great return, so this drill teaches the running to run hard and expect to break tackles.

The Defender, on whistle or kick, avoids the first blocker with a dummy, he should use his swim or rip technique.  He then avoids the two other defenders and then attacks down field, running in his lane.  When he gets about 5-7 yds from the returner he should break down and react to the return mans movement.  He should then attack the runner and tackle inside out, getting his head across the runner.  Practice this drill full speed or wrap up tackle, but make sure it is done at full speed.  This simulates many situations in football.  The kids love this drill and it can be very competitive.  Good Luck
